People just hop on this weird "Sega weird and gross" bandwagon and never give it any real thought :-\ People seem to just think "wow, Sega controllers were weird." Somehow they look at the controllers and manage to miss the obvious: the button layout is derived from arcade cabinets, the d-pad has a rolling design structure which was intended to simulate arcade joysticks. These differences influenced nearly everything about their respective hardware and games libraries, and it's why the Sonic series was designed in a way which rewards repeated playthroughs and mastery. Sega wanted to bring the arcade into the home, while Nintendo wanted to develop games for the home. Too many people don't seem to understand or appreciate that Sega and Nintendo were operating under some very different philosophies. The d-pad is a very different beast, certainly has its strengths.
